Can strategy games really work on a phone?
Strategy is the genre I was most sure wouldn't survive the jump to touchscreens. Precise unit control, lots of information, tense micro — none of that sounds phone-friendly. And yet a few games have figured it out.
The trick is reduction, not simplification. Ironmarch Command, for instance, gives you a handful of units instead of an army, so selecting and ordering them never becomes a nightmare of mis-taps. Fewer pieces, but each decision carries more weight.
Map size matters too. Big sprawling battlefields need a mouse. Compact maps where you can see everything at once play beautifully on a phone, and they naturally keep matches short, which suits mobile.
If you've written off mobile strategy after a bad gacha experience, try a leaner, match-based one. The good ones prove the genre can absolutely work, as long as the designers respect the screen they're building for.
