Good progression vs. a treadmill: how to tell early

Good progression vs. a treadmill: how to tell early

May 7, 2026 · Mikael Rautio

The first hour of a mobile RPG is almost always fun. Levels fly up, loot drops, numbers get bigger. The real question is what happens in hour fifteen, and you can usually spot the answer much earlier if you know what to look for.

Watch what gives you power. If every upgrade comes purely from repeating the same fights, you're on a treadmill. If upgrades come from exploring, from completing varied challenges, from clever choices — that's a system that'll stay interesting.

Check how optional content is rewarded. Good games make side quests worth doing with meaningful upgrades or story payoffs. Treadmill games make them cosmetic afterthoughts, which tells you where their priorities are.

Finally, notice how you feel when you stop playing. If you log off relieved, that's a chore. If you log off thinking about your next build, that's a keeper. Trust that feeling more than any level counter.
